Pet Loss and Grief

Pet Loss

Coping with the impending loss of a pet is one of the most difficult experiences a pet parent will face. Whether your pet is in the final stage of their life, experiencing a life-threatening condition or has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, you and our doctors may decide euthanasia is the appropriate decision for your pet. Our team will calmly guide you through the end-of-life experience to minimize any discomfort or distress.

We would like to share our process with you.

❤️ A special room in our hospital was created just for you and your pet’s comfort during this process.

🧡 Most pets will have an IV catheter placed in their leg. This will allow our doctor to administer the medication in a peaceful, painless manner when you are ready. While our team is placing the catheter, another member of our team will review aftercare options with you and finalize your wishes.

💛 Our doctor may provide a sedative to your pet to calm them and help make their final moments more peaceful.

💚 Whenever possible, you may spend time with your pet in private until you are ready to say goodbye.

💙 When you are ready, our doctor will administer the medication and your pet will simply fall asleep and pass peacefully within 5-10 seconds. Our doctor will confirm they have passed.

💜 After the procedure we will prepare your pet for your choice of aftercare.

You are welcome to hold and stroke your pet throughout the euthanasia process. We have been privileged to witness prayers, poems, song and other expressions of love during a pet’s passing.

If you are unable to be present for your pet’s euthanasia, our experienced staff will be honored to stand in for you.

Aftercare

We offer 3 options for the aftercare of your pet’s remains.

Our staff will be happy to provide you with pricing for our cremation services.

  • Home Burial: we will assist you in preparing your pet’s body for travel back home for burial. We provide a white, cardboard coffin for transport of all but the largest breeds.

  • Group Cremation: this process cremates your pet, along with others, and buries their ashes at the Pet Cemetery. You will not receive any ashes back. You will receive 2 ink paw prints as keepsakes.

  • Individual Cremation: this process cremates your pet individually, and the ashes are returned to AESC in an urn of your choosing. A clay paw print of your pet, as well as two ink paw prints, are included with this service.
